Sydney Table - November 2006

Temporary Change of Management

November 21st 2006 09:27
Hello Guys,
It is with great excitement that i inform you that Edward has taken long service leave to go and celebrate his love affair with Thailand. If possible he will post from Thailand with some choice titbits about where to eat the best thai food. In the meantime I, (his brother) will run the blog. I hope that together we can explore the realms of good food.

Boun Appetit!
Eric

RealThai

November 15th 2006 11:47
RealThai is a fantastic Thai food blog run by Austin who lives in Bangkok. He discovers and shares all the little gems of food in Thailand, with a really enjoyable reading style, lots of pictures, and a major emphasis on the food, which is what we love. Whether you're interested in discovering places to eat in Thailand, or just want to read and learn about Thai food from its source, RealThai definitely a blog to frequent.

The Ploy Thai Moves

November 15th 2006 11:33
The Ploy Thai has moved from George St to Parramatta Rd, in the Petersham/Stanmore area. Replacing it at George St is the equally worthwhile Crocodile Senior Thai. But it's still worth going to Ann's Ploy Thai, and it's not as if the parking could have gotten any worse from George St...

Crocodile Senior Thai

November 12th 2006 08:01
768 George St Haymarket 2000 - 9211 6630

Ok well let's start with one of my favourite new places, Crocodile Thai Senior (CST). Yeah I know the name is weird, but just think of it as the place that replaced The Ploy Thai (which moved to Paramatta Rd near Leichhardt). And although the name is trying to show how 'Aussie' the place is, the food is actually really good, with charming waitresses. They have real Thai dishes which I haven't seen anywhere else in Sydney, even at Spice I Am; and have a particular emphasis on Isaan food - Isaan being the poorer northeastern area of Thailand which is predominately farming. Isaan food is usually very spicy, with more vegetables, and sticky rice.

CST has a whole section of the menu dedicated to som tum! Along with the sweet Bangkok style som tum with peanuts, you can have the Isaan som tum with plaa raa and crabs. Plaa raa is the unpasturised fermented fish sauce which is thicker and with more solids, and the crabs are the small crabs which live among the growing rice. This Isaan som tum is much more salty and sour, and very fishy tasting. And although I prefer the sweeter version (which you can have with anything from soft shell crab to chicken or salmon) with peanuts, I'm impressed that they offer it. However, when I ordered it, I was told I was the first non-Thai to have it. So come on people, try something new!

CST also has a lot of different salads and specials which are more unusual. The quality of the food is good, so you're going to be happy whatever way you go. And even though the stirfries have water added instead of being a dry base, I don't mind, because it's still very good.

So although the quality of the flavours isn't going to be as complex as at Spice I Am, CST shows guts in offering more unusual Thai dishes. This is definitely a place to come to try something new if you're looking for a change of scene. I can't stress how much I like this place, even if it's simply the thrill of trying something different, and the wonderful people who run it makes it even better.

Apologies

November 12th 2006 07:16
My apologies for the lack of posts on Sydney Table in oh, the last month and a half!
There's been a lot of other stuff happening, and although I wanted to, I never really got around to getting back into a routine with posting. But hopefully we can break this negative streak! So from now on, consider Sydney Table alive and kicking once again!
