Shanghai Super Noodle King

March 30th 2008 05:03
Nestled among other Shanghai-nese restaurants in the heart of 'Little Shanghai' Ashfield, the Shanghai Super Noodle King stands out among the crowd.

Shanghai Super Noodle King
Inside the Shanghai Super Noodle King - no one is complaining.

It's easy to see why. A line has formed by those in search for their favourite dumplings and pork buns despite at least five other surrounding restaurants offering the same menu. They had to have this one. It's already 2pm, way past the normal lunch time hours, yet they weren't looking any less busier as before.

I finally get my seat, after about 15 mins wait, which is still quite reasonable considering my record of 40 mins in line waiting to get into yum cha restaurants before. I sit down and search the menu. Nothing out of the ordinary when it comes to Shanghai-nese food: large selection of noodles, buns, dumplings and savoury pancakes, as well as a full list of a-la-carte Chinese dishes ranging from Peking Duck to Sweet and Sour Fish. It was indeed, hard to decide.

Our orders
The chines and pork dumplings, the won ton soup and the egg pancakes with dough stick

I chose to try their specialties, and ordered an egg pancake with fried dough sticks, pan-fried pork buns, Shanghai prawn and pork mini won ton soup, chives and pork dumplings and savoury radish cakes. (I am not a pig, this was to share between three people)

I was starving but I had to wait. Each dish is made to order even to the point of kneading the dough, but the results were well worth waiting for. The pork buns I was most impressed with. Fluffy white breads filled with juicy mince and vegetable fillings that has been pan-fried to have a crunchy base. It was most satisfying. The dumplings and won tons were also good, but the egg pancakes and the radish cakes were quite average. However, by the looks on the face of other diners, I can tell the rest of the menu are just as good.

I've been told next time I visit I should try some of the Chef's Suggestions such as Shredded Pork with Green Bean Sheet (which is meant to be a type of stir fried noodles). There is also the Tien-Jing Style Pork Buns (Named "Dogs will Ignore" in Chinese, don't ask me why)

I can't wait.

Beecroft Kitchen

March 28th 2008 05:13
If you live up the north western way, and you like Chinese food, you might just want to hop over to Beecroft Kitchen for a feed tonight.

This small, family run business is hidden inside the arcades of Beecroft Village opposite the train station. I never knew about it until my parents decided one day that they were too lazy to cook for a visiting daughter, and we all packed in a car and headed over to this 'mummy's favourite'.

I can see why. Insignificant as the location might be, they are always packed for dinner. My parents are fussy eaters, especially when it comes to Chinese food so I was already impressed by how much they praise this place. The menu selections were reasonably priced, with choices ranging from poultry to meat to seafood. I chose number 19, the Billy Chicken, which is fried chicken with honey and spicy sauce. Sort of like a honey chicken but with more flavours. And to my mum's dismay, I ordered some spring rolls. (Spring rolls are westernised you see, my parents would never order them without me) and I had a satisfying meal. Not only did it all taste great, it was accompanied by great service.

They do home delivery to nearby suburbs as well as take away. BYO dine in.

Apologies, I never remember to take photos!

The Tea Room - QVB

March 25th 2008 03:29
I have never been to The Tea Room on my own will. Not because I don't like it, but it's simply out of my budget for the moment.

The Tea Room

I have been to The Tea Room mostly for university academic functions. I was invited to a breakfast by the Sydney Uni / IBM alumni event and then again with UTS. It was a pleasant experience. The food were fantastic, the service is tops and the only down side to the place is its location. Right at the top floor of the QVB and no view. The windows are too high on the walls for you to enjoy any of the city views, not that you would notice, being immersed in the delicious cakes and pastries while chatting away over a cup (a very delicate cup) of tea.

I've always wanted to go back for a high tea session. From the list I recommended on Sydney Fun - Sydney High Teas the Tea Room would be on the top of them all. I have actually 'seen' it by looking in through the door, but boy do I wish I have someone to go with!

Jordon's is always advertising. They are always offering specials and they are at the prime space occupying the first block of the Harbourside centre right where the water of Darling Harbour starts.

So what's wrong with it? Nothing major. I have dined there twice, and twice it was satisfactory. Note that the experience was just satisfactory. Not excellent, yet not bad.

Both times I ordered the seafood platter. It just seems easier to share between two people rather than trying to order two things and keep wondering if the other person's meal was better than yours. The seafood platter is well presented, with prawns skewered like rockets on top of two impressive layers of seafood. It cost $132, a bit more than what Nick's across the waters charge, but I guess with the amount of mussels being served, it's barely just worth the money.

What the little bit of less satisfactory about the place is its shabbiness. For a restaurant charging such prices, you'd expect them to be a little bit more posh, with a bit more atmosphere. It seems that they are trying to rely on the actual harbour to do the work, and putting out plastic deck chairs and wobbly tables to minimise their operation cost.

They do make it up with the good service though.

If I do get a chance to visit again, perhaps I'll try ordering some single main meals to try the quality of their real cooking.

Worth taking your overseas visitors to, if only just to impress them with the good water front dining in the beautiful Darling Harbour.

There was a time I thought City Extra was special. The way it is, the quirky newspaper menus, the semi-retro decor and the big serving of burger and fries.

City Extra Menu
The famous City Extra menus

Unfortunately it's special no more. City Extra is no longer anything extra. Sure, they still have the special newspaper menus and the quirky loud decor of black and red bricks, but that's all. The food is average, service is second to average and not to mention the expensive price tag that comes with these average items.

The restaurant's only fortunate venture is it's water front and convenient location at the Circular Quay which attracts the tourists already in the area. Also, being 24 hours means they've got the businesses of the night owls as well.

Personally I'd prefer a burger from the local chicken joint rather than City Extra, however if I do find myself wandering around the city one day at wee hours of the morning, it may be my last resort.

Dine in the forests at Cafe Saligna

March 14th 2008 06:10
This small day time cafe is in the middle of a forest.

Serious. And it's in the Greater Sydney distinct of The Hills.

Cafe Saligna is at the Information Centre of the State Cumberland Forest in West Pennant Hills. It's easy to find if you know where to look, but if you are looking for clear signages to the cafe, you may just find yourself turning in circles in West Pennant Hills.

However, once found, the cafe is a small oasis from the hustle and bustle city life. My relationship with the cafe is intense, as my office is just around the corner. Often at lunch time when I need a quiet place to gather my thoughts, it's the first place I think of.

The cafe servces light and ful breakfast until 11am and has reasonably good coffee. Of course, having a barista as a sister, I am a little spoilt and judgemental about coffees so you would have to try it out to form your own judgements. The menu then turns into a variety of salads and light meals such as pizzettas and antipastos to suit all tastes. The service is great, although unfortunately the staff turn over is pretty fast so you probably won't get the same waiter each time you go, but sitting there in the shade, surrounded by trees and shrubs listening to bird call all morning or afternoon, I can't think of a better way to relax.

OPEN 7 DAYS 9.30AM - 4PM.

For a place on the Rhine...

March 10th 2008 01:02
I am constantly looking for the flavour that I so loved when I was in Germany, and nothing those touristy restaurants like Lowenbrau at The Rocks and the Bavarian Bier Cafe in Manly can offer. Rhinedorf so far, will have to be my favourite when I start to feel a little nostalgic of those days.

What Rhinedorf has to offer, is hearty, home family German cuisine. Upon entering the restaurant, the wooden decor immediately presents you with a warm homely feel. The chatter and laughter of the other diners creates a friendly atmosphere, as you ponder which beer you would like to try on tap.

Why I like it here? Well firstly they serve beers real Germans love. None of the 'Fosters of Germany' Lowenbrau and Becks beers that are really only available in Bavarian Germany. Rhinedorf serve a selection of beers from all around the country, and yes they are all very good! For those who normally don't really like beer, may I suggest the cloudy Schöfferhofer Weizen. It's a wheat beer with a slight hint of sweetness, and even those not normally used to the taste of beer warm to this style. For those who love beer in general, have a look at their extensive menu to satisfy your curiosity.

The food menu shows a range of cuisines from all over Germany. You get the typical knuckles and sausages dishes and mixed platters, but if you would like to try something more towards home cooking, I strongly recommend the Rinder Rouladen and Sauerbraten. The Berliner Eisbein is a good choice if you are into the knuckles. Don't get put off by it's bland appearance, the meat is tender and falls of the bones and you will love its juicy texture.

After your meal, the desserts will tempt you for more, or simply sit around and chat over yet another glass of beer.

Summit Restaurant
Level 47
264 George Street
Sydney NSW
02-9247-9777

It has been 40 years since the founding of the Summit, located on level 47 of the Australia Square in the city. The revolving dining floor at one metre per minute, the restaurant not only boast one of the best views in Sydney, the quality and service is equally outstanding.

The Summer Cocktail Bar
The view from the Cocktail Bar at The Summit (Image source: Summitrestaurant.com.au)

There are two parts to the Summit. Half of the revolving floors contain the restaurant part of the operation and the other, a cocktail bar.

While there is no significant difference from their menu to any other five star restaurant, it is in their dessert menu that I love. Creative souffle and tarts recipes with names already tingles the taste buds, it is definitely worth skipping entrees for.

After dinner, move towards the cocktail bar for some freshly made fruity cocktails or after dinner tea and coffees, the atmosphere is great with the view from the top, I personally prefer this restaurant than say, the Sydney Tower Restaurant.
