Sydney Table - August 2008

Conveyer Belt Sushi

August 21st 2008 12:18
I am all for good quality authentic sushi - however I think being stuck in Coffs Harbour where they only use smoke salmon on sushi I am starting to appreciate some of the so called 'conveyer belt' sushis around town.

The Sushi Trains

These guys almost started the trend. They weren't the first, but they were the ones to bring this conveyer belt sushi culture to grow right across Sydney. I am not a big fan of them, and will only walk in to one if I am completely desperate for sushi and nothing else was around. There is however, ONE of their stores that have been good quality - the one in the George St cinemas. They seem to have specials all the time attracting a lot of people to go there, especially movie goers and as a result, have a faster turn around for the plates sitting on the conveyer belt. So if it has to be Sushi Train - make sure it's this one!

Sushi Bar Makoto
You'll recognise this sushi bar by the daily patient diners waiting in a line that often extend onto adjacent streets. Sushi here are fresh and are of good quality in comparison to all other conveyer belt sushis. Cost a bit more and you have to wait almost everytime though. So not good if you are in a hurry and just want a quick meal.

Tomodachi
Top floor of Broadway shopping centre, this is another popular hit for cinema goers. I like these guys because there is a selection of quality hot food as well as the conveyer sushi and they are always pretty creative with their sushi making often coming up with some weird ideas before other sushi places get into them. Moderately priced too.

Sushi Choo
This one is new, hip and expensive. It's part of the Ivy establishment with fancy dish labelling and pricing methods. However does have a good a la carte menu and the sashimi pizza will knock the socks off any raw fish lover. I just don't know if I am willing to pay the price for just conveyer belt sushi....

And it all started with a train.....

Do you have a favourite conveyer sushi place you would like to share?
