Burger Me It's Bloody Good

January 31st 2009 04:21
OK - I did promise less Manly establishments so tomorrow I am off to Chinatown for Yum Cha lunch with the folks but today while rental searching and after a refreshing swim in the perfectly clean and soothing waters of Manly Beach, Simon (new flattie to be), and self headed into Burger Me for some lunch.

Their philosophy:

Our passion is food - we love it!

The Australian market was missing a ‘bloody good’ burger. You know the kind you used to be able to order from the old corner store, the kind that your mum used to make, with the flavour that oozes right out of the burger and down your arms!

Well that burger is bloody back, however, now it’s even better!

Real taste from home-made sauces and a patty that fills the burger from one edge to the other, not a ball sitting in the middle of the bun waiting to give you indigestion.

To develop the bloody best burger, we enlisted the help of two great chefs, and many others that helped develop this great Australian concept over the past 2 years and now it is ready to take consumers by storm.

Burger me is right next to the Steyne and overlooks Manly Beach, it doesn't look overly flash and if you didn't know upstairs was there you would probably walk out and eat your burger on the beach BUT there is an entire floor upstairs dedicated to eat in and the front overlooks Manly Beach. It's awesome, it won't win awards for decor but the burgers bloodywell could. They are a) massive, b) affordable (more expensive than Maccas and c) a million times better than Maccas and mostly better than every other burger I have eaten.

I had the deliscious Bah Bah Burger which was a lamb burger with lettuce tomato and minted yoghurt, Simon was a pussy and ok, he's in training for a 2K ocean swim tomorrow, had the You're Kiddin Me Burger, prime oz beef, melted cheddar and tomato sauce. For an extra $2.50 on the burger you get a can of soft drink and their super fries, they come with a lemon salt and pepper covering them instead of standard salt. YUM

They also have things like the Bite Me Burger which is tempura whiting filliets, burger me creamy tartare, aussie cheddar, aioli, tomato, lettuce and spanish onion plus there are chicken, mexican and other varieties. And the burgers are huge and they are correct in saying their meat goes all the way to the edge. It's delish.

If ever in Manly on a beautiful summer's day this is the place to eat with friends or I have even been known to sit there with a book and enjoy the view of the surf with my burger and book.

On January 2nd 2011 I have had a very angry reader write to me and inform me that they allege this restaurant gave them food poisoning - I returned to this establishment and tried their beef burger. The place now has a new owner and makes their beef burgers fresh. To be honest I bloody loved it and I am sorry if JSmith had a bad experience but to me it is still the best burger establishment in Manly - on the beach!

Dear incredibly rude anonymous poster - I deleted it because you were too rude and arrogant for my site - I just don't want someone so aggressive posting comments on Sydney Table.

If you had written something like:
I completely disagree with your comments to an article you actually wrote a year ago and believe we got food poisoning from said restaurant then I may have actually contacted the venue on your behalf and tried to get a result for you, but instead your comment reads as though I am the sole heir to the Burger King restaurant and actually personally placed some kind of poison on your meal to make you ill.

From the way you have spoken to me my response is more along the lines of go and fuck yourself. And do not go onto anyones blog and tell them what to do - bloggers put a lot of effort into their writing and to have someone that comes across as an arrogant prick lecturing them is like waving a red flag in front of the site owner's face.

I can see that you are quite upset and angry at your experience but I wrote this article over a year ago and a million different things could have happened in that time. A new management, a new style of operation, different produce for example. If you had wanted to discuss this I would have been all ears and assistance - instead I will delete your comment again and make all posts to this site moderated prior to appearing on the site - I am on the site every day so if you would like to waste your energy be my guest. I would suggest though that you write to the venue itself (they have their own website) and/or the local paper (The Manly Daily).

I will post a warning at the end of my article claiming an angry reader contacted me and alleges the restaurant gave them food poisoning and will venture back in the next few weeks to see if the conditions have altered since my last visit.

But please - I am not the burger that gave you food poisoning so please learn some bloody manners.

G'Day Jason,

My comments were not directed at you in any way simply the shop itself, so apologies if you interpreted that in a different way.

I like to eat good, fresh food and rarely have anything that is overly processed. If I had food poisening then I/we would have likely been sick, however this was not the case. We did however have toilet issues the follwing evening which I won't go into futher for the sake of decorum, I sure the picture is clear.

When you order a burger featuring "prime OZ beef" you would expect the staff to take out a fresh patty of meat, flatten it on the grill and cook it as normal. This instead was a large, flat #approx 0.5cm# oddly coloured "patty" which when cooked turned a very dark colour and seemed very processed. It had an odd smell, did not fill you at all, and didn't sit well in general. I got a brochure in the mail not long after this place opened which looked great and as I was in Manly that evening with my partner we decided to try it out.

I would not bother contacting the store as I won't ever eat there again, so really what would be the point of that? As for anonymity I always use an alias online, surely that doesn't make my comments invalid in any way.

Review sites like this surely are for negative as well as positive comments hence my annoyance at my comments being removed. I appreciate this update included at the end of your review and await your experience when you return to the said store.

I could not recommend this place to anyone who enjoys a good fresh burger.

JSmith

If you are looking for fresh red meat prepared onsite, I would recommend the lamb or kangaroo.

Similarly, the grilled chicken, thai chicken, crumbed chicken and felafels are all prepared onsite.

The standard beef is not processed, although it is pre-cooked and thus may lead to some disappointment.

I work at BurgerMe, and I just want to let you know that last week we changed the beef patties. They are now made onsite with unprocessed, uncooked beef mince, mixed with various spices, sauces, and brown onion. Having tasted it myself, it is a huge improvement on what we had before.

I have to say I ventured back today and ordered the beef burger to try and found it sensational - the burger was large and I had got a choice of white or wholegrain roll - wholegrain was delicious. It had lots of fresh lettuce, tomato, onion and the meat was tender and tasted very fresh - it was slightly overcooked and had too little of the homemade relish on the burger but you can't beat that view and I would definitely order it again. It is def not the best burger in the world and not your traditional burger but I do think it is the best burger joint in Manly still.
I am truly saddened that JSmith did not enjoy the experience but my faith has been revived in the place.

Thank you Jason. I am the owner of BurgerMe. The original beef burger was part of the establishment when I bought it. I was not wholly satisfied with it but customers seems to enjoy it. The logistics of cooking a fresh beef burger in an establishment that sells over 400 burgers a day, 60% beef, is a challenge. We order the meat daily and nothing is frozen except the fish and falafels (which we make from fresh and then freeze otherwise they fall apart in the fryer). The post on your site was not the only sabotage of my business. The same happened on Urbanspoon.(except someone actually changed the name of my shop) I am all for honest opionion but when it is unwarranted, it dissappoints me given that we do try to make the freshest hamburger we can. If we were no good we would not have regular customers coming back time after time. And I take comfort from that fact. I appreciate that you took the time to come and visit. I would have loved to have a chat if you had let me know you were there. My extremely loyal and lovely staff notified me of the blogs both on here and on Urbanspoon. And if the staff love the food then you know it cant be as bad as JSmith makes it out to be. And if he had such a serious complaint, then contacting me and allowing me to address the problem would have been a much more civil way to deal with the matter. I am glad you enjoyed the new beef burger. Your comments have been noted with regard to the cooking. We had had lots of comments that we put too much relish and sauces on the burgers, and have cut back... seems we cant please everyone. Next time try our Kangaroo burger. It is our specialty and one that the tourists love.

Hi Esther and thank you for coming into the debate. It is great to see you taking the time to defend your establishment.
I would have been much happier if the "JSmith" contacted you direct or was less abusive and I would have asked you myself. I am sorry to hear you have suffered sabotage. It is completely unfair. I would check out your local burger competition for possible saboteurs. You guys def do have the best burgers in Manly. I have tried numerous burgers but not the Kangaroo yet. Funnily enough I made Kangaroo fillets for dinner in a sweet plumb and ginger sauce last night - YUM. Will try out that burger when in next and will ask if you are around and say hi.

The staff were great on my last visit - well the one who served me. Young kid, long brown hair - made a great burger. Next time I will ask for more than normal chutney.

Best of luck with Burger Me - that upper level is one of the bets places to eat when in Manly and OMG - those chips YUMMMMMMMMMMM
