Garfish - Breakfast
February 28th 2009 02:57
I headed off with my great friend Carrie for a nice morning out in Kirribilli to suss out the markets that one of her friends said she would love. Being famished we decided on breakfast first. We walked the streets trying to find a nice place with outside eating and most of them were packed to the rafters but we spotted Garfish and found a newly vacated table outside.
It was very cosmopolitan and Carrie was so excited we could sit down, have a great breakfast and read the papers or magazines provided and pretend we were snobs picking on everyone's dress sense as they walked by. What seemed so exciting turned out to be a disorganised disaster meal.
Firstly, our waitress was flawless with her service and even though she was run off her feet she was always there when we needed her and asked if we wanted more coffees, juice top ups and even called me "Sir" the whole time. Yes please LOVE IT.
Now my gripes - we chose Garfish based on the menu framed on the front of the restaurant and the fact it had a vacant outside table. However, when we sat down we were given a menu that was completely different. I asked her if I could get the kippers florentine w/ spinach, poached eggs, cafe de paris butter (yes I am watching my figure
) to which I was told it wasn't on the menu - when I questioned why the menu on the front door has it she told me the menu has changed - MY SUGGESTION - CHANGE THE BLOODY ONE ON THE FRONT DOOR FIRST!. OK - so I ordered the spincah w/ poached eggs, smoked salmon and horseradish hollandaise. YUM. The old menu had all their meals coming out on sourdough toast or wholemeal toast, this one arrived on good old Coles variety english muffins chopped open. One of my muffins w/ YUM on it was cold while the other one was hot - if using a plate warmer prior to delivery feel free to place it all underneath it! I did enjoy it but not only could I not taste any horseradish the meal was way too small for the $18- attached to it. Home coooking this could be done for about $7-.
Then Carrie ordered the same but asked if she could exchange the smoked salmon for bacon - she was told they were doing ham today. OK - odd for a breakfast restaurant but it's the same pig so no worries. Carries arrived without the spinach and when she asked about this was told the ham does not come with spinach - DOES THIS NOT DEFEAT THE PURPOSE OF EXCHANGING SALMON FOR BACON/ HAM?? So she asked if we could get a side of spinach - no worries and no charge for the spinach due to misunderstanding. Thankyou
The tomato juice and coffee were sensational although for the first time in about 10yrs I had to put sugar in my my moccha as I could not taste any chocolate - maybe a mix up again.
Now while I have bitched about this and would not venture there again for breakfast I do want to go at night time to try some of there seafood which is part of the reason they have won these awards:
"Best Informal Seafood Restaurant 2008" Restaurant & Catering Awards for Excellence, NSW
"Best Formal Dining 2008" North Shore Times True Local Business Awards
"Best Formal Dining 2007" The Manly Daily True Local Business Awards
"Best Casual Dining 2007" North Side Courier Business Awards
"Best Casual Dining 2007" North Shore Times True Local Business Awards
"Champion Restaurant 2007" Champion of Champions NSW/ACT
"Champion Restaurant 2006" Champion of Champions NSW/ACT
"Best Casual Dining 2006" Mosman Daily Community Business Awards
Some of the mouthwatering meals on the old menu are: coriander egg noodles w/ cuttlefish, snow peas, garlic shoots, soy & sesame oil OR crisp fried soft shell crab w/ coconut sambol & green papaya salad (YUM) OR there are blackboard specials where you choose the fish, how you want it cooked and what garnish you want with - I do like this method. They also do a selection of oysters with my fave being an oyster shot w/ cucumber jelly & champagne. And the desserts range from pineapple & mango carpaccio w/ lemongrass & lime syrup & coconut sorbet TO roasted black figs w/ pistachio baklava, orange & cardomom ice cream (OMG). But then again these are all on the old menu and the website so they may not be present if you go based on my choices.
Now - I would check before you go as some meals are only available at one of the restaurants and I find the web menu with its asterix system quite confusing. The website is HERE

On a side note the Kirribilli markets kick serious ass with plenty of clothing bargains (I scored some leather white shoes for an upcoming wedding for $25-) and heaps of bric a brac. Carrie bought me an old cookbook by Gretta Anna (expect the chicken and crab casserole recipe online soon - it's Carrie's fave) and I bought her some cool coasters as a new housewarming present for her. Suss it out.
