GRILL'D BURGERS: A Review
November 19th 2011 06:38
I have spent the last couple of weeks in a small town known as Charlestown, just outside of Newcastle, NSW Australia. I had no idea where to go and what to eat. I stayed in my little bubble of about a one kilometre circle around where I was working. I ate dinner at a local pub every night called The Mattara (review to come) and lunch mostly at a superb shopping centre that is mammoth known as Charlestown Square. My bonus is I had a friend that lived locally and he informed me of the places to go to - I just wished I asked him sooner.
He recommended a burger joint known as Grill'd that was in a second food court of the Charlestown Square that I had not discovered before. It's a burger chain that claims it makes healthy burgers and they were not only that - they were heavenly.
I wrote about a sensational burger joint a year or two ago in Manly called Burger Me that got involved in a gourmet burger joint battle in Manly and lost out. They ended up selling to someone else who changed the name but I have yet to visit them. This place honestly wipes the floor of Burger Me - the burgers are just heavenly. They cater to vegans AND gluten intolerant people and have all their buns locally baked without sugar or preservatives. They also grind all their own meats using 100% lean beef and chicken breast - one thing they don't say is whether it is organic?
Their steak sandwiches use 1824 prime aged Scotch Fillet and they also make all their own sauces. Seriously I walked into Burger Nirvana
I ate the Baa Baa Burger (pictured) which has a grilled lean lamb pattie with avocado, tasty cheese, salad, relish and herbed mayo. On my second visit I tried the Mustard and Pickled which was a lean beef pattie with dijon mustard, dill pickle, tasty cheese, salad and relish. On my next visit I want either the Hot Mama which has beef, roasted peppers, dill pickle, tasty cheese, tzatziki, salad and harissa paste OR Caesar's Palace which has chicken breast, crispy trim bacon, free range egg, shaved parmessan, baby cos and Caesar dressing - BRING IT ON!!!!
They have joints in every state except NT and Sth Oz (boo for them). My only complaint about the NSW ones is why 2 of them in Newcastle, 2 in Darlinghurst and one at Harbourside - plus the one in Crows Nest - where is the one in Manly and Chatswood so my weekday meals are complete?
The Hearld Sun says "Hamburger connoisseurs should pray for one in their neighborhood" and Good Weekend says "The best hamburgers in Australia or the world" - now beat that wrap - my quote is hmmmmmmmmmmmm "fuck me - they are shit hot" hahahahaha. I dare them to put it on their site
.
