The Pleach is HERE, New Hybrid Fruit
February 22nd 2010 07:50
The mating of a peach and a plum has become the new cool fruit, and it all came about by accident in the little town of Mudgee.
It is becoming a press sensation worldwide, as farmer Bruce Davis, accidentally created and found it in his compost after discarding a blood plum seed and a peach and finding they cross-pollinated.
A fruit sensation has been created - a furry and firm fruit that looks like a peach on the outside but on the inside it's bright red flesh and a small pip just like a plum.
In the US a farmer had success in making a pleach but it was white fleshed and more peach then plum. This is the first time it has occurred with plum like flesh.
Since The Mudgee Guardian broke the story on February 12, it has generated quite an interest including a press release from NSW Minister for Primary Industries Steve Whan.
“We already know a plum and an apricot can cross, it’s called a Pluot; but a peach and plum is an exciting combination which is new for our State,” Mr Whan said.
“It is yet to be seen if this fruit has a place in the market, but if there is a new opportunity, I would encourage the grower to explore it.”
Mr Davis said he believed he would have to wait until next year to see if the fruit grows in a similar fashion.
NSW Industry and Investment Mudgee horticulturist Susan Marte said there was no guarantee the seeds sown from the fruit would produce the unusual fruit again, possibly reverting back to their original parent traits.
Regardless of whether it occurs naturally again or not we now know it can happen and I hope that Bruce has much success with mother nature or whether he goes out of his way and explores this further. This could become a world sensation.
Nice work Mr Davis.
