Red Sea Restaurant, Alice Springs
December 25th 2009 22:36
On my recent week of relaxation and work in Alice Springs I was accomodated in a very decent local hotel called The Diplomat. In Alice Springs I am pretty sure the tallest building is three stories. My hotel had two stories and I got to basically stay on the penthouse level
There are a few decent restaurants in the centre of Alice Springs and because I was not paid until after I returned to Sydney the only places I could eat in were ones that accepted credit cards. Also, because I was quite lazy and lethargic, in the typical and dry 40degree heat I discovered Red Sea restaurant attached to my hotel would soon become my local for the week.
They opened for breakfast at 6.30am and served up a delicious and affordable big breakfast for me daily, hey, I was on holidays and not worrying about my figure
The staff were friendly and as they are part of the Diplomat Hotel I would see the lady who served me dinner the next morning cleaning my room.
The dinners are all A La Carte and the atmosphere was enjoyable, if somewhat more of a stylish RSL atmosphere with the place being ideal for all the oldies on holidays in Alice, excluding myself
They specialised in seafood and the food was sensational. My favourite meal was by far the pan seared Australian Barrmundi served with tobiko caviar and lemon butter sauce. They also had a beautiful tender duck confot with sauteed baby spinach and blood orange glaze.
My favourite entree was easily the smoked emu salad with rocket, pear, blue cheese and cashew nuts. I got very depressed when they had run out of the dessert I was screaming for, Passionfruit brulee served with citrus tuille but I did enjoy the suggested alterantive of Boysenberry pudding steamed with vanilla icecream and coulis (YUM but I still wanted the brulee
)
They also offered some divine specials I wanted to try but did not get to as got taken out to the best restaurant in Alice (which I will write about later). But Kangaroo Pie floater with mash, minty mushy peas and red wine jus had me salivating and then there was the Coopers beer battered barramundi with steak cut chips, garden salad and wild lime mayo.
If you get to Alice Springs then I do recommend this one. It is more stylish and laid back as opposed to some of the more pub styled places in Alice. I would describe it as like a piano bar styled restaurant. Well worth it, and while a few people were dressed up, being a guest I had no issues wearing shorts, T shirt and thongs and reading my book over dinner. They also have an extensive wine list and most mains are around $30 each on the more exotic meals.
They are located on the Cnr of Gregory & Hartley Street, Alice Springs 0870, Australia.
Forgive some of my dodgier phone taken pictures please.
