Tetsuyas: The Ultimate Gourmet?

May 14th 2008 04:57
It's been years and Tetsuya's in Sydney is still topping the restaurant scene as the ultimate restaurant to go to...

Tetsuya is well known for his cuisine. His style is Japanese and French fusion with a very high emphasis on high class. And the prices show it too. A ten course degustation menu at $195 per person on normal days. Expect to pay double or triple on days like Valentine's Day.

Sure. His cuisine may be great. I hear that the ocean trout is fresh and tender while his desserts sweet but not over powering. I ponder on this: even so, is the price tag really necessary?

I have yet been to Tetsuya's, so you can say I am either ignorant of his talents or simply just jealous of those who can afford such cuisines, but I just can't seem to justify the urge to pay $195 just to fill my stomach with food.

The restaurant is in the centre of a beautifully decorated Japanese style garden. Even though I haven't eaten there, I have walked past the location numerous times. Yes, there is the class and yes, there is the luxury feel of the whole ambiance. Reservations I hear, are taken six months in advance. I am surprised how many people are still waiting to taste this sensation at the same time surprised at how many people can afford such meals, despite what we have been hearing about inflation and the cost of living and the struggling families in the news.

Sorry - this is meant to be a food blog.

So. Back to Tetsuya's. Has anyone been with a story to tell? I am intrigued to find out.

I have a friend who went to Tetsuya's with her husband. With the food and wine, their bill came to a total of $600 for 2 people! Hmm...I realise Tetsuya's is a top restaurant but justifying $600 for a meal? Give me Maccas/KFC anyday really.

Aimster - that's what I can't justify. I mean ok I don't have Maccas/KFC anyway but there are plenty of places out there you can get decent meals for a decent price... maybe it's one of those must try at least once in your life places?

I was mass jealous when I saw the title - I was sure you had been there. I am the same - just can't justify spending more on a meal than my weekly rent however I had a friend who went there for his birthday. $800- for 2 people but he did say it was the culinary experience of his life and would not change it for anything. If I win lotto or surprisingly ever get a huge tax return I will definitely book just so I can say - "yeah, of course I've been to Tetsuyas - it's so last year". LOL. Another friend of mine is a lawyer, their firm takes them all there for a monthly Friday working lunch!!! Another reason I hate lawyers!!!!

OMG - a MONTHLY Tetsuya experience? and here I am slavering my time only to get knocked back with company budget?!
Well you know what Jason - after writing this post and after answering to Aimzster, I thought to myself - I am going to try it THIS YEAR. When I do, I'll write up another post about it. THEN! You can really be jealous hehe. If you don't beat me to it by winning the lotto!

The race is on!!
Would just love to go there. I have often walked past it shooting daggers with my eyes at the people walking in or out!!

It's like the ultimate rich person's club isn't it? They probably ask you to bring a bank statement when you book.

"you only earn $70 000 a year? Peasant! Hey why don't you try Newtown Thai, that's probably more your pricetag...I mean style".

$600 for two people? You could feed a small town Guatemala with that.

Jason - yep

Ruby - I don't disagree however it's like every thing else in life - it's a matter of priority and sometimes a little bit of luxury (I don't think besides that law firm, there are actually people that eat there ALL the time)

An American tourist who was trying to woo me took me there in 2004... I must say it was the best culinary experience I have ever had, and would contemplate going back for a special occasion. But yes, it's incredibly exorbitant. The degustation menu changes seasonally; when we had it it included eight or nine small dishes, each of them coming from different food groups and totally delicious. I seem to remember the sorbet the best - one was pear and the other was strawberry.

So I guess even so he didn't succeed?

Um... long story? He didn't succeed but I married him anyway, haha! I would have done anything to get out my parents' place at that stage. I lived with him in Stanford (the university), CA for eight months or so, then I got fed up with his clinical depression and decided living at home wasn't so bad anyway. We divorced on friendly terms, but we don't keep in touch - we only really got married so I could legally stay in the country anyway, though I think he was under the delusion that he was in love with me (when he couldn't even love himself). Like I said, lonnng story.

PMC wow! I'd love to hear the long version of that story some day.

yes Amy, I am ashamed to say I have eaten there a lot in my reckless corporate card days

The food is AMAZING and seriously the best I have ever eaten, it literally melts in your mouth. The $195 price actually includes glasses of wine to suit each series of dishes so it isn't as bad as it seems, they also do BYO if you like.

So to answer your question, who affords it, well its easy not to care about other people's money......

and a little secret, you can nearly always get a table Saturday lunch because no-one knows they open then just in case the adsense earnings on this posts gets you over the line (sic)

PMC - I agree with Ruby - you should write about it in your blog Would you like to guest post in my Love Adventures?

Louie - I know what you mean by the corporate card days. I am on it in Melbourne right now and geez I actually feel bad!
I have a total earning of $12.56 on Adsense at the moment so it might take a while for the $$ to roll in... hmm.

$12.56 hey, well I guess that means adsense will sponsor you there in about hmmmmm ten years.....

if only every Orble vote was a $$ hey, then again imagine how nasty it would get, multiple log ins......

Hi Rosemary - I feel like that at the moment, however there might just be that one day I happen to be able to afford such things I think I will at least give it a go.
