Vegetarian Heaven? Come to Berrima
October 11th 2009 10:55
Sorry Jason. I can't help it I had to share this place with everyone.
This little restaurant is about 1.5 hours drive south of Sydney in the town of Berrima - The Zen Oasis vegetarian restaurant - hidden away in a small block of land with its beautifully manicured gardens and pond and beautifully cooked vegetarian buffet.
Who would've thought vegetarian food can actually be - really delicious?
Well, that was our first impression when my parents suggested we drive down for lunch. Vegetarian? Really?
But, we made the trip anyway, and we did not regret it. This restaurant is living proof that vegetarianism doesn't have to evolve around sliced cucumbers and carrots. There is actually texture and flavour that came with the dishes and most of them, even doesn't taste vegetarian as these guys are pros at creating 'fake meat' out of soy products.
Try barbecued "pork" and steamed "fish", both items part of their expansive menu. Some of the dishes are even catered for Vegans which is generally very hard to cater for.
The restaurant only open on weekends and reservation is a must as there are 2 seatings for lunch and almost all the time, both sessions would be booked out. The owners are from Taiwan, and you'll find a mix of Chinese/Taiwanese/Japanese cuisine on offer.
After the meal, take a stroll around their Zen garden to walk off the excess food. The environment really is, very zen, very relaxing.
Buffet per person is currently $28, but I think I saw a sign on the door saying that the price will increase in December to $31 per person. Just for once, the food is worth it.
If you feel like the drive - and want to try something different, check it out:

Thanks for dropping by! I know the Temple at Woollongong, and I would have to say it's actually better because not only do they have great food, the environment is also great. Not that the temple isn't also serene and calm, but this place would be more for nature and country lovers.
Definitely do stop by on your way down south!
